Star of Hope strives to find new and effective ways to serve adults with developmental disabilities. We consistently pursue ways to increase efficiency in our organization making by sure the funds coming to us are used strategically and responsibly.
Talking About Disabilities
This is an outreach project to educate our communities on respectful ways to communicate with, or talk about, people with disabilities. We provide presentations and have brochures available for individuals or groups. It is our goal to spread understanding regarding developmental disabilities.
We actively recruit volunteers from the community and have developed policies and training opportunities for community members who want to provide direct services to Star of Hope clients. We are fortunate to have such responsive residents in our community that care for people with developmental disabilities.
The House of Myrtlewood/Your Oregon Connection
In December of 2005, the Star of Hope purchased The Oregon Connection, a myrtlewood mill, factory, and retail store. This project was developed to diversify vocational training and employment opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities and to ultimately provide an additional revenue stream for Star of Hope. Since that time, the store has undergone several changes, has expanded on the products it sells and has employed several of our clients. It is now called The House of Myrtlewood/Your Oregon Connection and is a wonderful place to learn about one of the oldest businesses in Coos County, get some truly unique gifts, and experience the hospitality that got The House of Myrtlewood called one of the must-visit sites if you are visiting the Oregon Coast!
Star of Hope Fundraising
Star of Hope raises additional funding through donations which go to the agency, grants used for completing projects or expanding & improving current endeavors, as well as events such as our Valentine’s with the Stars of Hope where we educate the public on developmental disabilities and seek to further our clients’ involvement in their surroundings.
Technology Integration and Education
Star of Hope is working to upgrade computers and software to increase the computer skills of both the individuals we serve and our staff. The project will give clients access to online training in an effort to increase their employment skills and expand their horizons for job searching.
Supported Employment and Job Coaching
Star of Hope has undergone some major changes in recent years, shifting away from a sheltered workshop and switching to a more training oriented approach to personal skill growth and education for those serve. We work on seeking employment for those we serve within our community, and focus on practicing the skill sets necessary for our individuals to be successful within their selected jobs.
